What Is Invisalign First? A Greystones Parent's Guide to Early Treatment for Children

Most parents think of Invisalign as something for teenagers and adults. So it often comes as a surprise that there's a version designed specifically for younger children: Invisalign First.

At South Beach Clinic in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, our specialist orthodontic team — led by Dr Paul Murphy, MOrth, a former President of the Orthodontic Society of Ireland — regularly meets parents unsure when their child should first see an orthodontist, or whether clear aligners are even an option at a young age. This guide answers those questions clearly.

What is Invisalign First?

Invisalign First is a clear aligner system made specifically for children, typically aged 6 to 10. At this stage most children are in mixed dentition — still with some baby teeth alongside their first permanent teeth.

This is a form of early orthodontic treatment, also called Phase 1 treatment. Rather than waiting until all the adult teeth arrive, it works with your child's natural growth to guide the jaw and dental arches, creating room for permanent teeth. Unlike bulky expanders and fixed appliances, it uses smooth, custom-made, removable aligners tailored to smaller mouths.

Why might a child need early treatment?

Tooth and jaw issues don't suddenly appear in the teenage years — and habits like thumb-sucking or mouth breathing can affect development long before the adult teeth come through. Orthodontic guidelines recommend a first check-up by around age 7. This rarely means treatment starts straight away; often the orthodontist simply monitors growth until the timing is right.

An early assessment can spot:

  • Crowding — not enough room for permanent teeth

  • Spacing and narrow dental arches

  • Crossbites, overbites, underbites and open bites

  • Jaw growth concerns, easier to guide while bones are still developing

  • The effects of thumb-sucking, tongue-thrusting or mouth breathing

Treating these early can reduce — and occasionally eliminate — the need for more complex work later.

How does Invisalign First work?

  1. Digital scan. A handheld scanner captures a 3D image of your child's teeth in minutes — no messy moulds.

  2. Custom plan. Your orthodontist maps out how the teeth will move, often with a preview of the projected result.

  3. A series of aligners. Each set is worn for roughly one to two weeks, gently shifting the teeth and making space for permanent ones.

  4. Fewer visits. Several sets are provided at each appointment, so Invisalign First often needs fewer in-office visits than braces.

Treatment commonly runs 6 to 18 months, followed by a retainer to hold the result.

The benefits for children

  • Comfort — smooth plastic, no sharp brackets or wires

  • Removable for eating — no food restrictions

  • Easier brushing and flossing — aligners come out for cleaning

  • Fewer emergencies — nothing to break

  • Discreet — virtually invisible, avoiding the "metal mouth" worry

  • Lost an aligner? Usually a minor issue, as your child moves to a fresh set regularly

Is my child a good candidate?

Invisalign First suits many children aged 6 to 10 in mixed dentition with crowding, spacing, narrow arches or developing bite issues — but not all. The biggest factor in success is compliance: aligners only work when worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and parents play a key supporting role. Children with complex skeletal or bite concerns may need a different approach. The only reliable way to know is an in-person assessment with a specialist orthodontist.
